Microchipping

What is microchipping?

Microchipping is a legal requirement for all dogs over the age of eight weeks and from 10th June 2024 for all  cats over the age of twenty weeks. We also provide microchipping for other small animals.

Microchipping your pet is the best way to ensure that they can be returned to you if they are lost or stolen.

Many pets can be microchipped, including cats, rabbits and other small furries. It is a legal requirement for all dogs over the age of eight weeks old to be microchipped and for their details to be kept up to date, and you can be fined if you do not ensure this is done.

Collars and tags can be lost or removed, but microchips are permanent. However, they will only work if you keep your details – address, phone number etc – updated and accurate.

What does the process involve?

The microchip is implanted beneath the skin of your pet in a procedure that causes little or no pain, carried out by your vet or another trained member of the team.

The chip is about the size of a grain of rice and will last for the duration of your pet’s life.

We can also help you to register the microchip on Petlog, or to update any details as you require.

How does microchipping work?

If your pet is found, a professional such as a vet or a dog warden will scan the microchip and be given a 15-digit code.

This will then be matched to the details logged on Petlog, who will run security checks before supplying your contact details.

From there you will be reunited with your pet – but only if you have kept your details up-to-date on the database!
